President No. 5

At his peak, the fifth president of the United States, Founding Father James Monroe, made a ton of money. He was born into a planter family, and he had a massive 3,500-acre plantation in Charlottesville called Ash Lawn–Highland. His wife, Elizabeth Jane Kortright, also came from money, the daughter of a wealthy British officer and merchant. Monroe held more public offices than any other president, starting with his election to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1782 until his retirement in 1825. However, after serving his country for half a century, beginning with his service in the Revolutionary War in early 1776, he had incurred many unliquidated debts, and he found himself severely in debt when he entered retirement. Plagued with financial difficulties, he was forced to sell his Highland plantation.
