Even though the first Van Buren emigrated from Holland in 1633 and Martin Van Buren spoke English as a second language with Dutch as his primary language in his youth, he became the first American-born U.S. president since he was born after the American Revolution. He is also one of only two men who served the country as secretary of state, vice president, and president. He came from a humble background, born in Kinderhook, New York to a farmer and tavern keeper, but he used his interaction with people from various backgrounds at his father’s inn to his advantage as a political organizer. Van Buren made a substantial income working as a lawyer and a public servant. And like all early presidents, he had an estate. He owned the 225-acre estate in upstate New York which he called “Lindenwald” and now known as the Martin Van Buren National Historic Site.
