The heavyweight wrestling champion from Yale, William Howard Taft, was also a big shot in politics. Not only was he the 27th president of the United States, but he was also the 10th chief justice of the country, making him the only person to date to have held both offices. His career goal was to become a Supreme Court justice, and the White House remarked that Taft was more interested in law than in politics, but his wife, Helen Herron, encouraged him to pursue a political career. Taft was a lawyer, judge, and Solicitor General. He was brought into the political arena when President William McKinley appointed him as civilian governor of the Philippines. Even though his personal ambition was to become Chief Justice, he repeatedly declined offers of appointment to the Supreme Court while he finished his political work. Taft did return to law after leaving the White House, joining the Supreme Court as Chief Justice until he retired.
