Years in Office: 1841 to 1841
Political Party: Whig
President No. 9
Born 1773 (Lived 68 Years)
Unlike his grandson, William Henry Harrison married into wealth. He eloped with his wife, Anna Tuthill Symme, the daughter of Judge John Cleves Symmes who was a landowner and a politician. Even though his father-in-law initially didn’t approve of him, Harrison won him over and bought 160 acres of land from him which enabled him to start a farm and build a home for his young family. He also ran a successful horse-breeding enterprise which later helped him in his political career. He was appointed Secretary of the Northwest Territory, elected delegate in the House of Representatives, and named governor of the newly established Indiana Territory. Harrison won with a modern presidential campaign, with his supporters giving away bottles of whiskey and other promotional items. Harrison gave the longest inauguration speech to date, a 90-minute 8,445-word talk, but he unfortunately also served the shortest tenure as president, dying from septic shock due to enteric fever only a month after he took his oath of office.
