President No. 18

Even before his presidency, Ulysses S. Grant was well known as the commanding general who led the Union Army in winning the American Civil War. Despite being a reluctant politician and having no political experience, the war hero was unanimously nominated by the Republican Party and was elected as the 18th president of the United States. Grant stabilized the economy, created the Department of Justice, and demolished the extremist Ku Klux Klan. He was a military genius and had many presidential accomplishments; however, he was exceedingly unlucky in business. After a decade in the army, he failed many attempts finding a career in farming, real estate, and rent collection. After his presidency, he went on a two-and-half-year long world tour with his family and returned home to America with most of his savings depleted. He tried his luck again in business to earn money and build a home, but he imprudently invested in a financial firm, was duped by a conman, and ended up penniless.
