Herbert Clark Hoover had a rough start in life. He became an orphan when he was only nine when his father died from a heart attack in 1880, followed by his mother who died from illnesses in 1884. He and his siblings stayed with different relatives, and when Hoover turned 11, he went to live with his uncle. Hoover worked many part-time jobs while studying geology at Stanford University. He began a career in mining after he graduated, starting with several low-level mining jobs pushing ore carts in Nevada to working as a mining engineer in Australia then China. He worked around the world and amassed $4 million (equal to over $90 million today) from his roles and holdings in various international mining companies. He was called the “Great Humanitarian” when he became president because of his altruistic efforts, including raising millions of dollars to provide food, medicine, and supplies to people in Europe affected by the war. He also donated his presidential salary to charity.
