James Madison Jr. was America’s smallest president at five foot four and barely weighing a hundred pounds, but he was also one of the wealthiest. He was born at Belle Grove Plantation, the oldest of twelve children, to a wealthy tobacco planter. Madison inherited Mount Pleasant, later named Montpelier, 5,000-acre plantation in Orange County, Virginia, making him the largest landowner in the area at the time. He also made a significant amount of money during his time in public service as a congressman, secretary of state, and president. Unfortunately, Madison left the presidency much poorer than when he started politics because of the financial collapse of his tobacco plantation. The steady decline in prices of tobacco, as well as his stepson’s mismanagement, lost him his fortune. During the final years of his life, Madison found himself in a sea of financial troubles, his health deteriorated, and he was confined to his bed at Montpelier until he died of congestive heart failure at the age of 85.
