John Calvin Coolidge Jr., often referred to as “Silent Cal” because he was generally reserved in private, was born in Plymouth Notch, Vermont on the fourth of July, the only U.S. president born on Independence Day. He graduated cum laude from Amherst College and was encouraged by his father to pursue law. Because he couldn’t afford the cost of law school, he apprenticed with a local firm, was admitted to the Massachusetts bar, and became a country lawyer. Coolidge had a steady two-decade career as a lawyer while he built his career in politics. He started as a city councilman in Northampton, Massachusetts, a position that offered no salary but gave him valuable political experience. He became a state legislator, mayor, senator, governor, vice president, and eventually the president. After his presidency, Coolidge moved to a modest rented house and began writing his autobiography. Had he been alive today, he would’ve received multi-million dollar offers for the rights to his memoir.
