Franklin Delano Roosevelt, often referred to as FDR, has won four presidential elections in landslides and is America’s longest-serving president. He was born in Hyde Park, New York and came from wealthy old New York families of landowners, merchants, and shipbuilders. Roosevelt did not only gain his wealth from inheritance but also from marriage when he tied the knot with Anna Eleanor, the daughter of socialites and who also happened to be his fifth cousin, once removed. Before his presidency, Roosevelt had high-ranking, and most likely high-paying, jobs as state senator and assistant secretary of the Navy. In 1929, he won the election as governor of New York despite contracting a paralytic illness that he concealed from the public. In addition to his fortune, Roosevelt had properties in Georgia, Maine, and New York, including his 800-acre Springwood estate which was not only his birthplace and home but also his last resting place.
