DDT

Huffpost

DDT or dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane, is the very first synthetic insecticide that was created back in the 1940s. It was used to prevent typhus, malaria, and other insect-borne diseases. But as time passed, it was soon realized that DDT was a huge carcinogen that could even travel through the atmosphere, reaching very far distances. It also managed to stay for long periods of time in the environment it was used, eventually accumulating in the fatty tissues of the body. Because of this, the U.S. decided to ban it in 1972 and eventually, the rest of the world did the same.
