But after a 2005 Chicago Tribune report actually released an article that claimed that no Spanish slaughterhouse actually met the American FDA standards, it left the country worried about the spread of swine flu. Because of this, any selling, import or buying of Spanish ham in the United States was required to have a proper license, up until 2011 at least. Nowadays, although the outright ban was lifted, travelers cannot bring in any Spanish ham for personal or commercial use without first having an FDA license.
