Anabolic steroids were highly controversial already back in 1988, but it became highly controversial due to Ben Johnson beating Carl Lewis and winning the gold medal during the Seoul Olympics. After checking his urine, it was discovered that Johnson used steroids, causing his medal to be revoked while leaving the athletic community with his tail between his legs.
