Sassafrass oil was a highly popular tree-based herbal supplement that was often used for a number of things, including food and traditional medicine. According to Everyday Health, in 1979, the FDA had found that research shows that sassafras oil, when used with safrole oil, can actually cause cancer, amongst other things. Although it can still be found on the market, it remains a banned item and should be used with caution.
