The Ackee Fruit is native to West Africa and is actually the national fruit of Jamaica. The ackee fruit tree also grew quite tall, reaching up to 50-feet in height at times. But unfortunately, this particular fruit is banned within the United States by the FDA because it contains hypoglycin, which is a non-proteinogenic amino acid toxin. The problem with this is that if the fruit is consumed before it’s completely ripe, a person can have a very serious reaction known as the Jamaican vomiting sickness, which can even lead to death in bad cases.
