Redfish

Coastal Carolina Fisherman

Here’s another example of a fish that has been hunted until the population was so depleted, they needed to be put under protection. The redfish, also known as red drum, was so popular it was a major staple in most New Orleans households and restaurants, as well as in other Southern hotspots. Despite the attempt to curtail the fishing and sale of redfish in 1989, by 2007, President George W. Bush decided to take further action, making it illegal to catch, consume and sell it from any federal waters. He also encouraged states to make it a protected fish in state waters as well. These day, all Gulf states except for Mississippi have made it illegal to commercially harvest redfish, or even catch it in sport fishing unless fishermen practice catch and release.
