13-Year-Old Christian Bale Was Slapped For Real To Show A Genuine Look Of Pain

Known as a committed character actor, proving his range and versatility as a preppy serial killer in American Psycho and losing over 60 pounds for his role in the psychological thriller The Machinist, Christian Charles Philip Bale was introduced to enforced method acting very early. In Steven Spielberg’s 1987 war film Empire of the Sun, the director instructed one of the actresses to slap young Bale for real in one of the scenes. Not expecting to be actually struck in a scene that they’d repeatedly practiced with a fake slap, the recorded look of pain and betrayal on 13-year-old Bale’s face was genuine.

Widely recognized today for his intense method acting, the English star has received numerous awards, including an Academy and two Golden Globe Awards. Months after his emaciated part in The Machinist, he gained a hundred pounds to don the cowl in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.
