Michael Fassbender Served As An Altar Boy At An Irish Church

It’s hard to imagine how the man who portrayed an incredibly powerful mutant supervillain was once an altar server, ringing bells and fulfilling other liturgical duties at Prince of Peace Church in County Kerry, Ireland. When he became a head altar boy, Michael Fassbender was entrusted with the keys to the church, and it was his task to open the church doors for weddings and lock up after the guests leave. Often, he’d get a big tip from the best man. Once, young Fassbender overslept, and he had to run across the field to open the door for a waiting congregation and two visiting American priests—if only he had Magneto’s abilities then.
Though Fassbender had earned extra pounds as a head altar boy, the Irish-German actor gained Hollywood fame for his role in the critically acclaimed historical drama film Hunger. This was followed by a string of blockbuster movies, including Inglourious Basterds, Jane Eyre, 12 Years a Slave, X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Steve Jobs.
