Kate Winslet Was Bullied In School And Called Blubber

Kate Elizabeth Winslet has won many accolades, including Academy, Emmy, and Grammy Awards, as well as three British Academy Film Awards, for her sharply drawn portrayals of troubled, spirited, and unusual women. Long before she was propelled to global stardom with her leading role in the 1997 epic romance and disaster film Titanic, Winslet was bullied at school, locked in a cupboard, and called Blubber. Schoolmates teased Winslet, then a sandwich maker who worked at a deli, for wanting to act.

Fat-shamed so many years ago, Winslet was chosen among 175 girls who auditioned for the 1994 psychological drama Heavenly Creatures after she impressed Peter Jackson with her acting. Soon after, Emma Thompson gave Winslet a much larger part in the 1995 film adaptation of Sense and Sensibility. After rising to fame with Titanic, the highest-grossing film of all time before Avengers: Endgame and Avatar, Winslet took on more roles in critically acclaimed dramas, including Quills, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Finding Neverland, Revolutionary Road, and The Reader.

Outspoken about her refusal to let Hollywood define and dictate her weight, Winslet, listed as one of the most beautiful women in the world by People magazine, supports causes against bullying and body-shaming.
