Before that poignant “I love you 3000” scene, Robert Downey Jr. made his debut in Hollywood at age five with the 1970 surreal comedy film Pound which was written and directed by his father—the same father who allowed him to use marijuana when he was six years old, and father and son emotionally bonded over drug abuse.
RDJ appeared in many films from the early 80s to the early 90s, including Weird Science and The Pick-up Artist, and he made his breakthrough performance as a cocaine-addicted party animal in Less Than Zero. He was also a regular cast member in the popular sketch comedy TV program Saturday Night Live. Unfortunately, substance abuse wasn’t just an act, and RDJ was arrested numerous times for drugs.
After many years of substance abuse, arrests, and rehabilitation, RDJ finally kicked the habit and returned to the big screen. Staying clean and drug-free since 2003, RDJ reclaimed his glory playing Tony Stark/Iron Man in ten of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films.
