How Is This an Ad For Tonic?

Slapped Ham

There are just so many disturbing issues in this photograph. From the human baby-faced pig, to the slicked back hair, two tiny teeth peeking through on the bottom gums, and the fact that the caption reads, “Makes children and adults as fat as pigs,” nothing is ordinary. Although that’s what this ad was probably hoping for, it’s still so strange that what Grove’s is selling is “Tasteless Chill Tonic.” Yet what the ad is actually promoting is Edwin Wiley Grove’s fever-remedy made from quinine but with flavored syrup, precisely so it won’t taste horrific. And during a time when malaria was rampant, when cured, kids and adults would fatten right up!
