The mass transit system in North Korea is typically crammed. But privately-owned vehicles are scarce, even in Pyongyang. While taxis are now available, and increasingly becoming common, these are too costly for the average North Korean. If you are a high-ranking employee of the government, the use of factory or official-use vehicles can be an alternative to get around. For those who can afford it, motorized bikes imported from China are quite popular. However, scooters and motorcycles are rare. Still, for the common folk, bicycles are the most common alternative. Sadly, taking photographs of people who ride their bikes for hours each way to get to work and back home is forbidden, since they look tired and unkept. Who wouldn’t after a couple hours of riding your bike?
