North Korea has the industrial capacity to produce vehicles. In fact, they can manufacture around 40,000 to 50,000 vehicles a year. This however is just roughly 0.05 percent of the total cars produced per year in the US. These automotive brands are commonly seen North Korea, namely: Pyeonghwa Motors, Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod (GAZ) and Sungri Motors. If you do go to North Korea, you might wonder, why are there no Toyotas, Nissans or Mitsubishis in North Korea? You have to thank Kim Jong-Il for that. Since in 2007, Kim Jong-il ordered all Japanese-built vehicles confiscated. According to the story, he allegedly saw a non-working Japanese car blocking the road, and because of this he deemed that all Japanese cars are of low quality and would be detrimental to the country. Recently, cars are slowly becoming common place in Pyongyang (the Capital of North Korea). However, for the rest of the country, there are just 11 cars per 1000 people. The common folk are still getting used to seeing cars on the road. As proof, the picture above shows children playing on the middle of the main avenues, since they aren’t used to cars being on the road yet.
