North Korea has an ideology called “Juche”, which is an ideology of self-reliance. However, if you get to travel to the entire country (not just in Pyongyang), even the official tour guides won’t be able to dispute that poverty is ever-present in the country. This fact makes it doubtful at how self-reliant North Korea actually is. Especially when you remember that the World Food Programme (WFP) has been consistently been providing food aid to North Korea since the 1990s. North Korea has been dependent on international aid for decades. However, the average North Korean is lead to believe that the foreign food aid is a war debt that they are owed.
