North Korea has suffered a lot of food shortages and famine through the years. Even though the tour guides would choose the best locations and places in North Korea for the trip and in some cases even create choreographed scenes of “daily life” in North Korea, there will be instances of unguarded moments where you might still see what the real situation is in North Korea.

The photo above is one of the most popular photos circulating in the west that was originally taken by Eric Lafforgue. In most cases, the caption for the photo in most cases would be “North Koreans Harvest Grass from The Park for Food.” In some cases, this kind of activity happen when authorities order starving villagers to trim the grass, knowing that they have provided food for the villagers while appearing strict. Regardless of the reason, the tour guides will get furious at you if you take photos of any similar situation.
