Public Transport in North Korea

Due to the shortages on fuel and access to cars for average citizens, the most common public transportation for North Koreans to travel around urban centers would be via trams and trolleybuses. However, there is limited information available about these trams and trolleybuses since North Korea is a closed society. As far as the rest of the world knows, only Pyongyang and Chongjin are the cities that have tramways.

If during your tour to North Korea you get to see a tram, you will most likely be allowed to take a picture of it. Provided that the tram that you see is in good condition. The picture above however is something that the tour guides would prefer to have deleted. The reason for this? Take a closer look at the tramway. It is rusty, has broken glass and is over-all run-down. This reveals a lot about real North Korean public transportation services.
