The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK or North Korea) has continued to face food shortages due to drought and floods in their “food basket” regions. North Korea continues to face an extensive range of food security challenges, which compound to the long-drawn-out humanitarian situation in the country. The country continues to fall short of meeting their annual food production requirement due to a varied of reasons, from shortages of arable land, lack of access to fertilizers, limited to no access to modern agricultural equipment, economic sanctions from the west (due to their nuclear development plans), and frequent natural disasters.
Because of the aforementioned lack of sufficient food supply, the World Food Programme (WFP) has been providing food assistance in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea since 1995. The WFP has been fighting malnutrition and assisting vulnerable families to cope in times of crisis. However according to the North Korean government, the WFP foreign aid is a war debt that they are owed. Therefore, taking photos of any WFP sign is prohibited.
