Farming the Traditional Way

The picture shows men plowing a field along the Pyongyang-Wonsan highway in Sangwon, North Korea. This photo can be considered as illegal since it displays poverty. North Korean agriculture relies a lot on manual labor with few machines and agricultural equipment in sight. And then during the harvest season, students are regularly drafted from cities to help bring in the crops in time before the autumn rains start. North Korea’s apparent disdain for modern technological options for farming is actually a way to maximize their resources. Free labor from an obedient work force is far cheaper than acquiring agricultural machinery and equipment. The resources that are saved from not purchasing agricultural equipment and machinery can better be used to augment North Korea’s Nuclear weapon research and ballistic missile development.
