This institution of higher learning was founded in 1853, initially offering night classes, and has developed into the one of the top private research universities in the nation. It has grown from offering basic courses into a university with seven schools that includes schools for law and medicine, offering more than 90 programs, including 125 majors, with almost 1,500 courses. Their medical school, which offers 13 degree programs and 76 specialties, is one of the best in the country. It enrolled over 15,000 students, with majority in the Arts & Sciences, and has an 8:1 student-to-faculty ratio. There are over 500 student organizations to choose from, and athletics is a big part of student life, with 3 out of 4 students participating in sports. Their research focuses on medical, environmental and energy, innovation and entrepreneurial, and plant science.
