The University of Virginia was planned and built by the third President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson in 1819, and oversaw the construction of the campus, with its most notable iconic Rotunda which Jefferson modeled after the Roman Pantheon, and it has survived operating during the Civil War. It is one of the eight original Public Ivies in the country, and its 11 schools and colleges offer more than 50 bachelor’s, 80 master’s and 50 doctoral degrees. Students may also choose to join in over 800 student clubs and organizations.
