Originally founded as the Medical College of Louisiana in 1834, it eventually became Tulane University after a donation of over $1 million was made by Paul Tulane. Transforming from a public to a private institution, it grew dramatically and is now a ten-school university offering its 14,000-plus student population 142 programs, 85 majors, and 130 graduate programs, plus 110 study abroad programs in over 40 countries. This university is also classified as being “very high research activity” with focus on the sciences, social sciences, medicine, and liberal arts to name a few, and is also a member of the AAU. It has more than 200 student clubs and organizations, with 10 fraternities and 8 sororities comprising the Greek life.
