Former US President Benjamin Franklin founded the University of Pennsylvania in 1740. It sits on a 922-acre campus in the west side of Philadelphia and is one of the nine colonial universities founded before the American Revolution. Around 25,000 students are enrolled here on average each year, and is one of the hardest universities to get in to, as it only accepts 9% of its applicants. The university claims a lot of firsts including being the first medical and business school in North America. The gothic style buildings for which the university is also famous for are modeled from the buildings of Cambridge and Oxford University in Europe.
