Founded by a priest of the Congregation of the Holy Cross in 1842, it has become an established Catholic university in the country as well as a leader in scholarship and research. There are eight different schools and colleges, and approximately 8,500 undergraduate students are offered around 75 majors to choose from, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1. Its superb humanities and science departments are well-known, with the rate of pre-med students being admitted to medical school twice the national average. The campus that features a Gothic architecture and green landscapes sit on a 1,250-acre property, with 30 on-campus residence halls. Around 500 student organizations are active, as the school touches not just the academic pursuits of the students, but their emotional and spiritual needs as well.
