The school first took form in 1870 as the Jarvis Hall Collegiate school with courses like chemistry, math, mineralogy, and mining engineering, and has developed into the number 1 school in the world for mineral and mining engineering. The university has over 6,200 students, with a student-to-faculty ration of 16:1, and has over 220 student organizations to choose from.
It has 18 academic departments and 13 interdisciplinary programs, with the CoorsTek Center for Applied Science and Engineering as the largest research building, which furthers its goal of tackling the challenges to the earth, energy, and the environment.
