Originally established in 1917 as the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines, it became the public research institution known today as the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1975. Some of the major research units of the university include the Geophysical Institute, the Institute of Northern Engineering, and the Alaska Center for Energy and Power. UAF has ten academic schools and colleges, offering 146 degrees and 32 certificates, and among the popular majors with freshmen include mechanical engineering, business administration, and biological sciences, and psychology.
