Best:
If you’re a motorsports fan, then Indiana is the place for you! The state capital, Indianapolis, is home to the Indy 500, which is one of the biggest events in the world of car racing. Every year, gearheads flock to the city from all-over the US to witness America’s best drivers go head-to-head on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s 2.5-mile oval. The race was first held in 1911, and has since been considered the “Mecca” of American motorsports.
Renting houses is also something that the state’s capital is known for. The city of Indianapolis has one of the most affordable rates in the country, with the average lease costing just $806 per month.
Worst:
Coal.
Indiana’s air is the most polluted of the 50 states, thanks to the toxic fumes produced by the state’s coal plants. 40 million pounds of poisonous particles are released into the atmosphere, making the air dangerous to breathe for residents who live there.
Retiring in Indiana also isn’t something to look forward to. The Hoosier State is only one of two states in the nation to have a retirement income below $20,000, which can be quite depressing. To add to that misery, the state also has a shortage of mental health professionals, which makes it difficult for residents to find help for their mental woes.
24/7 Wall Street also finds Indiana as the “worst in every category of well-being – sense of purpose, social life, financial health, community pride, and physical fitness – than most other states.
