Mississippi is home to the blues, which is credited to have influenced the many genres that make American music what it is today. The melancholic sound can be traced to Mississippi River Delta as far back as the 1870s, and was mostly the result of African-Americans fusing their musical traditions with their everyday lives.
It’s no secret that the blues, songs that can only be sung with “a full heart and troubled spirit,” has shared its DNA with today’s musical styles, such as rock and roll, jazz, and RnB, and we have the State of Mississippi to thank for it.
Worst:
They say that the blues tell stories about how sad life is, and about the pain its cruelties cause the soul. Sadly, life in Mississippi hasn’t changed much since the birth of the blues.
The Magnolia State suffers from a high poverty rate, more than any other state in the nation, with almost a fifth of its residents unable to afford life’s basic necessities. 19.8% of people living in Mississippi earn wages that fall below the poverty line, making them unable to even afford basic health care.
In 2018, The U.S News and World Report placed Mississippi at the bottom of their list of states with good healthcare, primarily because most adults living there couldn’t shell out money to pay for costs
