Best:
If you’re a fan of the great outdoors, then you’d know that Alaska has the best wide-open spaces perfect for people to enjoy fishing, hiking and canoeing. Alaska’s unrivaled natural beauty and picturesque vistas make it the perfect place to visit, especially if you’ve grown tired of the city’s huge crowds, busy streets and never ending bustle.
The state also has the lowest population density, with only 1.2 people per square mile, way below the national average of 87 people per square mile! This is because The Las Frontier holds the highest percentage of land among the 50 states to be designated as national parks.
Worst:
Unfortunately, even with all its natural beauty, Alaska still has an ugly side.
The state is known to have the highest rate of suicides in the country, a statistic that has been on a steady rise, year after year, since 2007. Back then, the largest state in the U.S. already recorded a staggering 21.8 deaths due to suicide for every 100,000 Alaskans.
In addition, alcohol misuse in the state is also rampant, this according to a 2018 article published in the Alaska Epidemiology Bulletin. According to the publication, close to 50% of children in foster care came from households with records of parental or guardian alcohol abuse. Plus, 85% of alcohol-caused criminal convictions between 2006 and 2016 were for drunk driving. Not only that, in 2016, a staggering 182 deaths were blamed on alcohol, or 22.9 deaths for every 100,000 of-age Alaskans.
Crime is a problem too, with the state’s violent and property crime rate growing these past few years, which could be due to another bothering statistic: Alaska’s high unemployment rate.
